Dovile Svilpaite - Norfolk Based Fine Artist

All things different and unique are what appealing to me. Art comes in many shapes and forms and I chose to work with sculpture. As an artist, I work hard in order to develop my creativity. My creative mind is heavily influenced by social media content and travelling memories. It allows me to explore new things; such as people and trends. We live in a such world where everything is glamourised and perfect, although the behind the scenes and the process is much more beautiful. I believe many users of social media have felt a need of looking a certain way in order to fit it, but for me it is the opposite - I see flaws as a beautiful characteristic. This can be easily noticed on my head sculptures - the make-up isn’t applied flawlessly and smoothly, the skin texture isn’t as youthful, the colours are very saturated but it is so visually fascinating. No matter how you see beauty; the opposite of beauty is not ugliness; It perspective and engagement.

I am drawn to art work that forces your attention, and actively engages you with its form, its texture, its uniqueness and its aliveness. My medium of choice is polyclay, and it allows me to create my own version of a ‘human head’ and shape it into my own liking. These clay head sculptures allow me to 'build my own character' from scratch, since I don't use any inspiration images or sketches for my work, I allow my mind to do its job and sculpt my thoughts. These aren't specific people, or in fact they don't even exist. My main target for the audience is to notice the aesthetic and visual elements rather than jumping straight into the 'meaning' of the work.
